The session will be from 3 - 5 pm.
This week, the session will focus on preparing teams for the PMC Cup 2007. That means we'll be using the two 7-a-side fields to practice and get used to the size of the field and smaller goals. If you've signed up for the PMC Cup, do come down with your team (in your team's designated jersey colour) and practice with the others. Even if you've not signed up, do come down and join one of the teams for an afternoon of soccer fellowship.

TDEML Report [28th July]
The TRAC District East Mini-League (TDEML) concluded for PMC on Saturday 28th July 2007 with our first victory against Bedok Methodist Church. We were placed at the bottom of the league before the match but climbed up one position by the time it ended. 19 players turned up for the match.
The match kicked off with PMC being able to field one its strongest line-ups during the league, with the midfield five (Damien, Bangshi, Timothy, Sheldon & Choon Heng) adding lots of running & muscle to the team. The 1st clear cut chance of the match fell to Glenn, who was found unmarked by a good move & cross by Damien. Unfortunately, with the goal at his mercy, Glenn headed narrowly above the bar. However, he would make no mistake from the penalty spot after good work down the right by Bangshi saw him being brought down in the box. The referee pointed to the spot without hesitation. Being 1-0 up wasn't sufficient for PMC as a better goal difference was needed to improve its league position. Soon, PMC was up 2-0. Good work down the left this time saw Ronnie weaving his way past 2 defenders before shooting for goal- the ball richoted off the post, then the keeper before finding itself in the net. BMC tried to get themselves back into the match but most of their attacks were either foiled by the defensive trio of Jem Sin, David & Mark or smothered by Jem Tan. Unfortunately, as the half was about to close, an untimely backheel by Choon Heng gave possession away in midfield which led to BMC's counter attack down the left flank. The cross from the wing found the BMC forward open to tuck the ball under Jem Tan to make the score 2-1 at the half.
To keep the shape of the team, no substitutions took place at the half. This worked in favour of the team as they pressed for more goals. This came in the form of a 'Sheldon special'. An attempted clearance found Sheldon on the edge of the box. His first time volley gave the BMC keeper no chance as it whizzed into the top right corner. With a 2 goal cushion, the substitutes started to come on to keep up the pressure. On another slick move down the left by Damien, Glenn's flicked header found Rusydi in some space to control the ball and fire a shot past the keeper to put PMC 4-1 up. Goal #5 came from the right with the speedy Daniel beating the BMC full-back and firing in a low shot at the keeper's right near post. Unfortunately, a goal was conceded by PMC, again towards the close of the half when the ball was given away in defence, leaving the BMC players to bundle the ball into the net. No matter, PMC's victory had already been confirmed earlier in the match.
There was again much progress from PMC in the areas of passing and communication. Areas for improvement include better use of the ball, discipline and concentration during key periods of the match. The league has ended with Rusydi being PMC's top scorer with 3 goals. Well done Rusydi & keep up the good work for next season!

3 EPL Channels?
A subject of conversation on many of our lips may be the broadcast of EPL matches for the upcoming season. All we know is that the price of Starhub's Sports Package has gone up but we've still yet to find out how many channels are going to broadcast EPL matches and what the pre & post game shows are going to look like.

PMC Cup 2007
It is about one and a half weeks before registration for the PMC Cup closes. So far, 4 teams have submitted their registrations and it sure looks like the tournament will be exciting and fun-filled. We are also looking forward to the Prize Giving and Fellowship Dinner for all the players, as it will be in the form of a highly interactive programme. TDEML HOME match vs BMC [28th June]
The PMC Soccer Team will complete its TRAC District East Mini-League campaign this Saturday, hosting Bedok Methodist Church @ Springfield Secondary, 3 - 5pm. The objective is clearly to salvage some pride after 2 consecutive losses and to finish the league strongly.
Players called up, please arrive at 245pm so that we have enough time to warm up and discuss tactics!

Soccer Fellowship Report [21st July]
It was gloomy all day and there were incessant showers in the eastern region of Singapore. Despite this, Soccer Fellowship continued and it was a surprise that a record number of players turned up for the session. More than 30 players came to play in the rain and enjoy themselves on a much-softer pitch. Glenn shared some thoughts from the Bible this week, which can be summarised by the letters A, B & C.

With this in mind, Glenn opened in prayer, thanking God for the cool weather and the opportunity to fellowship over soccer.

Jimmy (Blues) and Kevin (Whites) captained the 2 teams. With the huge number of players, substitutes were lined up on the bench, eagerly waiting to come on. Both teams looked evenly matched, although the Blues had the majority of younger players while the Whites were mostly middle-aged and looked to lack a bit of pace. Nonetheless, the match was played in a competitive spirit, with neither team wanting to give an inch to the other. The Whites pressed strongly in the first half, with Glenn & Jeremy Tan both coming close. On one occasion, a slick move saw Jeremy Tan blasting high with the goal at his mercy. It was only after a brilliant shot from the edge of the box from Damien that caught the Blues 1st half keeper Jimmy off-guard, and put the Whites 1-0 up. The Blues response was swift, especially after some substitutions which saw Rusdyi, Daniel Low & JZ coming on to add pace to the attack. On one of the forays down the left flank, a low cross found JZ completely unmarked to slot the ball into the net to level the scores 1-1.
The 2nd half saw the Whites needing to take the lead again in order to win the game. Some re-organisation had to take place with influential midfielder Bangshi calling it a day to reserve some energy for a 10km run (Choon Heng calls this a light jog!!!) the next day. With Kevin playing a rather high line as sweeper, the Blues had to be careful not to be caught by the offside-trap and managed to breach the line on more than 1 occasion, but to no avail with shots either going wide, saved by the goalkeeper, or not being able to be converted. It was thus the Whites that took the opportunity to make their chances count with Maurice robbing Jimmy of the ball and slotting it past Michael Chua to put the Whites 2-1 up. Then, Jermaine rounding the keeper after a defensive mix-up to give the Whites a 3-1 lead. The Blues started to chase the game on a surge down the right flank, Darren floated a deep cross which fooled the keeper to sail into the empty net. With the score at 3-2, it was anybody's game. Fortunately for the Whites, Maurice & Jermaine were really on form and grabbed another goal each to put the Whites up 5-2 for good. Maurice even tried an audacious over-head kick that would have completely his hat-trick, but the shot went narrowly wide. Final score-

PMC Cup 2007
The time has finally come for the 2nd edition of the PMC Cup. Last year’s tournament drew 6 full teams and we look forward to at least this number again this year. Team Perfect 10 conquered all in 2006 and we wait in anticipation to see if they will make a return to the top, or will another team be victorious in PMC’s annual 7-a-side soccer tournament? The PMC Cup has been scheduled to take place during the National Day long weekend so that hopefully, more people will be able to participate. Here are the details-

Today in History...[16th July 1977]
30 years ago on this day, our Singapore Soccer Team walked onto the National Stadium pitch to face one of the biggest clubs in world soccer- Arsenal Football Club. The Singapore team were the reigning Malaysian Cup champions and were hosting the Metro Quadrangular Championships in July 1977, featuring Celtic, Arsenal & Red Star Belgrade. The Singapore team boasted Singapore legends like Quak Kim Song, Edmund Wee & 'Gelek King' Dollah Kassim. Also in the team for the night, was our very own Ronnie Liew.
In the recently featured article 'When Giants Roamed at Kallang' in the TODAY newspaper, this occasion came in #25 in the top 34 moments of the National Stadium's glorious history. Headlining the article was a photo of Ronnie trying to shoot past the Arsenal keeper (click on image below). The caption for the photo reads "Singapore’s Ronnie Liew found Arsenal keeper Rimmer too big an obstacle and the Gunners ran out comfortable 5-1 winners at the Metro Quadrangular Championship in 1977."
Now 30 years on, Ronnie is still as enthusiastic about soccer as he was then. In a recent chat with him, Ronnie shared about his exploits on the right-wing for the National Team and how his speed as a school sprinter served him well in that position. Playing with some of the household names mentioned earlier was also an experience. He recounted how hard training was in the 'old days' when drills were conducted over and over again to make sure that everyone got the basics right. He remarked that these days, wannabe footballers sometimes don't put in enough effort on the basics and want short-cuts to success.
We thank God that in Ronnie, we have someone with tremendous footballing experience to mentor our young footballers and to lend valuable insight when we play competitive matches. We might not see Ronnie on the right-wing very often now, but regardless of where he plays, we know that his contribution to our team will be immense. Thanks Ronnie for allowing this day in history to be shared with all of us here @ the PMC Soccer Community!

TDEML Report [14th July]
The TRAC District East Mini-League (TDEML) resumed on Saturday 14th July 2007 with our final away match against familiar opponents Christ Methodist Church. We were placed bottom of the league before the match and really needed a good result to finish strongly in the league. For this match, Captains Glenn & Sheldon started a call-up system to add some stability to the team. 18 players were called up.
The match kicked off without PMC's full squad as some players were held up with other appointments. The captains had to abandon their original line-up and make do with whoever was available. As such, utility players Kevin & Samuel Eyo were both deployed as forwards for the 1st half. Though very willing and full of effort, there were few clear cut chances for them to put the ball into the net. There was nothing much to show for either team in the first 20 minutes of the match. Both teams tried to control play and move the ball up the field. CMC looked more intent on using the wings while PMC applied a more direct central approach. The complexion of the game turned when out of what seemed like a harmless ball in the box, CMC scored their first goal through an audacious bicycle kick. Some called it a fluke while others applauded the sheer attempt of trying one of the most difficult moves in soccer. Either way, CMC was up 1-0 and PMC tried to get themselves back into the match. It helped that Daniel & JZ arrived to add some speed to the team. There were a couple of good chances to draw level but headers just went narrowly wide.
Changes were made to the team at the start of the second half, with the notable addition of the speedy and skillful Rusydi to the team. However, his twists, turns and runs into the CMC box did not bear much fruit as chance after chance either went begging or shots were saved by the keeper. An audacious chip by Damien even hit the crossbar. It was unfortunate that through one of the few CMC advances in the 2nd half, a deflected shot crept into the corner of the PMC net to put CMC up 2-0. Try as PMC did, they could not find a way to breach the CMC defence to score and the match ended 2-0.
The match saw PMC making some good in-roads in teamwork, communication and control, but it was worrying that the team failed to score for the 1st time in 2007. There will be more work to do and hopefully the team will finish the league respectably with the final match against BMC.
The match kicked off without PMC's full squad as some players were held up with other appointments. The captains had to abandon their original line-up and make do with whoever was available. As such, utility players Kevin & Samuel Eyo were both deployed as forwards for the 1st half. Though very willing and full of effort, there were few clear cut chances for them to put the ball into the net. There was nothing much to show for either team in the first 20 minutes of the match. Both teams tried to control play and move the ball up the field. CMC looked more intent on using the wings while PMC applied a more direct central approach. The complexion of the game turned when out of what seemed like a harmless ball in the box, CMC scored their first goal through an audacious bicycle kick. Some called it a fluke while others applauded the sheer attempt of trying one of the most difficult moves in soccer. Either way, CMC was up 1-0 and PMC tried to get themselves back into the match. It helped that Daniel & JZ arrived to add some speed to the team. There were a couple of good chances to draw level but headers just went narrowly wide.
Changes were made to the team at the start of the second half, with the notable addition of the speedy and skillful Rusydi to the team. However, his twists, turns and runs into the CMC box did not bear much fruit as chance after chance either went begging or shots were saved by the keeper. An audacious chip by Damien even hit the crossbar. TDEML AWAY match vs CMC [14th July]
PMC Soccer Team continues its TRAC District East Mini-League campaign this Saturday, visiting Christ Methodist Church @ the Christian Outreach to the Handicapped (Jalan Tembusu), 4 - 6 pm.
Players called up, please arrive at 330 pm so that we have enough time to warm up and discuss tactics!

Soccer Fellowship Report [7th July]
The session started off with really fine weather. It rained in the morning so everyone was looking forward to the soft field (which still wasn't really soft but we Praise God anyways!) About 18 players turned up at the start with more arriving by half-time with a total of about 24 for the day. John gave the devotion this week and encouraged all of us to communicate God's love by loving one another. The key scripture text is John 13:34,35 "A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you. By this, all men will know
that you are my disciples if you love one another". Do keep these verses in mind this week and see how it can apply to you.
Bangshi (Blues) and Kevin (Whites) captained the 2 teams. There was lots of running and tenacity shown during the match with both sides taking leads and then surrendering them. The Blues started off the stronger side with Jeremy Tan (goalkeeper turned striker) putting the Blues ahead after a defensive mix-up between Choon Heng & Whites goalkeeper Michael Chua. Not long after, a slick move down the right wing produced an excellent finish from Ryan Tan who slotted the ball coolly into the far bottom corner of the goal. Being 2 goals down didn't sit well with the Whites who pressed forward and managed to get a goal back through Maurice Lim. The match went this way with further goals being scored by the Blues through Jeremy again before strikes from Darren Tan (2), John Chia and Mark Leong brought victory for the Whites.

Soccer Fellowship [7th July]
Soccer Fellowship is ON this Saturday, 7th July @ Springfield Secondary School.
The session will be from 3 - 5 pm.
This week, the leaders will pick the teams only on the day itself so please bring BOTH a BLUE and WHITE jersey. Do come on time for devotion before play starts!

TDEML Report [1st July]
The TRAC District East Mini-League (TDEML) continued on Sunday 1st July 2007 with our 1st away match against Bedok Methodist Church. The match was held at the Christian Outreach to the Handicapped campus along Jalan Tembusu. Along with the team, we welcomed a 2 new faces, brothers Darren & Ryan Tan who were trying out for the team and an old face, ST Sports Correspondent Marc Lim.
The match kicked off without either team being able to control play. Balls were pumped into each others' half, hoping for a positive outcome. Things were looking bright for PMC with a few neat touches and attacks down the wing, with excellent play by Rusydi. Unfortunately, from the inability to clear the danger within our penalty box, an opportunistic strike led us being down 1-0 mid-way through the 1st half. However, the PMC response was swift. Rusydi weaved his magic down the left wing and fired a stiff shot past the helpless BMC keeper to level the match. An inspirational move after watching the Australian National Team play the night before! Things started looking up when Justin & JZ found themselves in a 2-on-1 situation with the goalkeeper, with JZ slotting the ball into the net to put PMC 2-1 up. Things started to look bright but before the half was up, a good strike by a BMC player from outside the box leveled the match at 2-2.
Changes were made to the team at the start of the second half in the hope of gaining the advantage. However, things seemed to fall apart for PMC in the 2nd period. Some very good individual play by BMC left the PMC defence bewildered and unable to prevent goal after goal from being scored. Before any order could be restored to the match, PMC had conceded 3 and was down 5-2. Changes were made to pull goals back but although the opportunities came, the goals didn't. A corner by Rusydi was narrowly missed by JZ a yard out and Marc's free-kicked almost shaved the crossbar. PMC had succumed to their 1st defeat in 2007!
The match definitely proved to be a lesson to the team and improvements need to be made a few areas. Nonetheless, the team can be proud to have played the game in a good spirit throughout and trying their best till the final whistle.

Field of Dreams Report
On 30th June, 14 of us gathered on a warm Saturday afternoon to make our way to the National Stadium. It was time to bid farewell to the Stadium that brought us many memories, mostly from the soccer matches that were played there. It was also an excellent time to fellowship, get to know one another better and talk soccer while a live match was being played right in front of us.
The event kicked off with the Legends match- Singapore ex-internationals versus the Malaysian ex-internationals. For most of us, we only recognised a few legends like V. Sundramoorthy and David Lee but we witnessed our age did not take away any skills of the players. What they lacked in speed and fitness was made up with good ball possession and team work, something we all wanted to learn from. The veterans used the ball very well and did not give away possession easily. Their build-up play was patient and calculated. The match ended in a 1-1 at full time and the Singapore team won after a coin-toss by the guest of honour!
The highlight of the evening was the match between the current National Team and Australia. Immediately after kick-off, we noticed the difference in standard. The Aussies were faster, sharper and were moving the ball at lightning speed. We were also able to see first-hand what Ronnie was telling us the previous week- the need for a target man. The Aussie attack really revolved around Mark Viduka, playing the ball at his feet and allowing him to string passes to the running wingers and midfielders. Time and again, our boys needed timely interceptions from Precious and Daniel Bennett to prevent conceding. They did well to hold out for a half but in the 2nd period, there was no stopping the Aussies and Viduka (2) along with Harry Kewell, won it 3-0 to the Aussies. It was unfortunate that Khairul Amri didn't score after a great move leading to his shot hitting the post.

In short, all of us had a great time and witnessed the passing of one of Singapore's greatest icons. We learnt lots more about soccer and in Isaac's words- 'inspired' to put these into practice on the field!
