TDEML Report [23rd June]

The TRAC District East Mini-League (TDEML) got underway on Saturday 23rd June 2007. The PMC Soccer Team arrived early to warm up, talk tactics and pray before the start of the match. Glenn briefed the team and everyone was good to go.

The match kicked off in our favour as we pressed for an early goal. This came within the first 5 minutes when a long ball bounced into Glenn's path. He controlled it and squared it to Jingzhong who put it nicely into the net, with the CMC keeper stranded. Being 1-0 up, the team tried to control the flow of the match but was unfortunately pegged back by conceding a soft goal. A long ball was not cleared by Jeremy Sin and it fell nicely to CMC's #7 who fired a stiff shot pass goalkeeper Jeremy Tan. With the score 1-1, both teams tried to exert their control on the match but with little dominance in midfield and some good defending, the score remained even at the break.

Wholesale changes were made to the team at the start of the second half. 'Coach for the day' Ronnie had pointed out areas to improve going into the second half and everyone was willing to give it a better shot. Unfortunately, it was CMC's turn to score an early goal when the half started. CMC's #7 once again managed to outfox the defence and tucked the ball into the net. With the score 2-1 in favour of CMC, PMC started to use their substitutes to full effect and to press for an equaliser. This came again in the form of 'route 1 football'- a long ball into the box was poorly judged by the CMC defence, leaving Rusydi in the clear to poke the ball pass the helpless CMC keeper. The equaliser gave PMC more impetus to press for the winner but this was not to come.

Overall, more experienced was gained by the team and an even greater awareness being felt in the the need to communicate more on the field and make it a team game. These will definitely be put to test when PMC plays its first away match on 1st July, Sunday.

TRAC District East Mini-League HOME match vs CMC [23rd June]

PMC Soccer Team kicks off its TRAC District East Mini-League campaign this Saturday, hosting Christ Methodist Church @ Springfield Secondary, 3-5pm.

Registered players, please arrive at 230pm so that we have enough time to warm up and discuss tactics!

Supporters are encouraged to come and support the team!

Soccer Fellowship CANCELLED!

Soccer Fellowship on 16th June has been cancelled! Sorry for the late notice, I only got a call from Singapore Sports Council at about 2pm when I was out for lunch. They want to protect the field and have cancelled all bookings because of the heavy downpour. Sincere apologies to all players who turned up at Springfield Secondary.

Soccer Fellowship is ON this Saturday, 16th June @ Springfield Secondary School.

The session will be from 3 - 5 pm.

This week, we are going to team up only on the day itself so please bring BOTH a BLUE and WHITE jersey. Maurice will be leading us in devotion this Saturday!

Soccer-for-Bibles Report [31st May]

The Soccer-for-Bibles Tournament was held on Vesak Day, 31st May 2007. Most of the team gathered at Farrer Park field bright and early, about 730am to prepare for the start of a long day. We were all excited at the prospect of doing well on our first tournament outing of the year. Already before the tournament, the team had raised $1050 in addition to the $1000 that the church had donated towards the cause of Bible distribution. We knew that win or lose, the tournament objective had been achieved.

The day started off with worship and devotion. The teams then started to warm up and prepare for 'battle'. We commemorated our outing and took a team photo while we were still clean.

Our first match was a real topsy-turvy affair. Our opponents were older and more experienced and had already played an earlier match to warm-up. We conceded an early sloppy goal but equalised through a fortunate deflected shot. However, from a free-kick, they scored the winner just before the whistle. It was a poor start to the tournament. However, we faired much better in the next 2 games. In both, we gave away penalties, but neither were converted by our opponents. These 2 victories put us in good position to qualify for the Logos Cup, if we finished 1st or 2nd in our group. We only needed to draw our final game against Wesley Methodist to progress to the Logos Cup. However, try as we did, we couldn't score against them and conceded another goal from a set-piece. We finished 3rd in our group, just 1 point behind 2nd and had to settle for entry into the Sower Cup competition. In many ways, this would be a blessing in disguise.

Before the Sower Cup competition could kick-off, it started to thunder and rain heavily. We took shelter at the stands in front of the Farrer Park tennis courts. We had a good time resting and catching up, talking about work and our army experiences. As the skies cleared, we prepared for the start of the knock-out phase. Our first match (quarterfinal) was a tight contest. With the match ending 1-1, we proceeded to sudden death penalties. Glenn coolly converted his before our opponents missed theirs. We were into the semi-finals. The semi-final match was the easiest match, perhaps due to the older opponents who had already tired by this stage, around 3pm. We put 3 past them and made our way to the finals.

The Sower Cup final was like a derby match against Christ Methodist Church. Rev David Wee prayed for us before the kick-off and the match was played in extremely good spirits. It was highly competitive but fair. Chirst Methodist took the early initiative by scoring first. Straight from the kick-off Tim shot us back into the match. With no further goals, it was sudden death penalties again. Christ Methodist opted to kick first and put their first kick past Jeremy. Glenn stepped up and gave their keeper no chance too. Christ Methodist's 2nd kicker however, sent his shot wide of the post, setting the stage for Kevin to step up, score and bring the Sower Cup to Pentecost Methodist Church.

The day was long and hard, but we all had a good time. What better way to enjoy soccer than playing for a good cause and even winning something in the process. The 9 hours spent at Farrer Park was well worth it! Here's how we all looked after the prize-giving ceremony.


The day ended with prayer and 'happy' good-byes. We're looking forward to the start of our District East Mini-League!

Soccer Fellowship Report [2nd June]

The session started off with people arriving leisurely. The Sower Cup victory had taken it's toll on the Soccer Team and most chose to rest their tired bodies this Saturday. Nonetheless, about 20 players still turned up to have a good competitive outing under a cloudy sky and cool weather. Kevin shared this week about how in Christ, nothing is impossible. The example of Paul Azinger was recounted and how God healed him of cancer and elevated him back to the top of the golfing world. Kaka's story of miraculous recovery is not unique and God reminds us everyday that He is all powerful.

Patrick (Blues) and John (Whites) were captains and picked their team-mates one by one. A match was played in a competitive but fair spirit with lots of midfield action and goals to show for it. It was a good game and everyone enjoyed themselves. Final score-

Field of Dreams- A Tribute to the National Stadium

For 34 years, the National Stadium has given life to our aspirations, hopes and dreams.

From her stands to her track to her field, dreams have been fulfilled in the pursuit of sporting glory, national pride and celebrating our common identity.

But the time has come to bid her adieu. On 30th June Saturday, from 5pm-10pm, the final event of the National Stadium's history will take place.

Join us for her last event and relive the Malaysia Cup days through soccer matches between veterans from Singapore and Malaysia, then watch the Lions take on the Socceroos. Snack to your heart's content as we recreate the good old days with runners hawking curry puffs, crackers and drinks.

After the last ball has been kicked, tune your attention to the closing ceremony featuring Team Singapore athletes, a ceremonial dousing of the flame and a fireworks & light display.

Tickets are on sale @ $15 for adults and $8 for students (excluding booking fee of $1 if purchased through website). I think it would be great if we could go down as a Soccer Fellowship to be part of this event.
